Barney describes the need for executive coaching to build leadership skills because “Millennials became the largest generation in the U.S workforce in 2015, and baby boomers are retiring at a rate of 10,000 per day. “
He proposes positive solutions: give homework and require journals between sessions. He also suggests that Millennials are comfortable learning with technology, so we should leverage messaging. He also recommends that some coaching/communicating happen outside work hours. His perspective as a consultant may not work for internal executive coaches, however.
The problem of scaling to a larger organization is a real one, as is scaling to a larger number of clients for a consultant. Individual coaching sessions should be multi-modal: preparation, communication, execution, and follow-up via messaging/text, presentations/slide shows (yes!), face-to-face meetings, video chats, emailed written assignments – the way we all communicate and learn! -MW-
